FAQ and compatibility
Common questions, every advancement, and how the mod gets on with other mods and servers.
Playing#
How do I get into The Remembering?#
Repair the broken machine in a Buried Works, or build your own Reinforced Iron frame anywhere and give it a redstone signal. After the first door in a world opens, thin spots can drop you in too.
I'm stuck inside. How do I get out?#
Type /backrooms leave. Or build a door: the chests, barrels and Vivid mobs inside give you iron, copper and redstone.
Why don't the blocks drop anything?#
They are copies. Only blocks you placed, Memarium ore and the vanilla pieces in misremembered places drop normally. A Memarium tool gets a rare drop. See Rules.
Why can't I hurt the Keeper?#
Nothing can until you pin it with the Shape: a Still Life Head on a T of five Blocks of Memarium, built inside The Remembering.
Where is the Abyss?#
It is not in 3.0.0. Under the End floors is the geometric level, and under that the loop brings you back to the top.
Is there a lore book?#
No, on purpose. The story is told only by playing: places, objects, sounds, mob behaviour and the advancements.

Compatibility#
Immersive Portals#
Optional. With Immersive Portals installed, every open door becomes one of its portals: you see the other side live and walk straight through. The top and bottom of the loop become world-wide portals too. Without it the mod draws its own view through doors and seams. Note that Immersive Portals needs Cloth Config installed.
Shaders, Iris, Sodium#
Works with Sodium and Iris, with shader packs on. The view through a door and the edge of the loop are painted into a texture first, so a shader pack draws them like any block.
Tested with#
- Immersive Portals, Sable, Sodium, Iris, Distant Horizons, Create, JEI, Jade, ModernFix, Curios.
- Better Minecraft 5 (tested on its server pack).
Other dimension mods
The Remembering blocks Nether and End portals inside it. Portals from other mods may also not behave inside; doors are the way in and out.
Servers#
- Install the mod on the server and every client. No other mods needed.
- Dedicated servers do not kick players for "flying" on the long falls inside (a pit, the geometry, the loop).
- Only up to 8 chunks are sent to a player inside The Remembering by default (
remembering.viewDistance): the fog hides anything further, and every chunk there is a 1392-block column. - Tune or switch off thin spots, build copying, the Keeper, Still Lifes, insanity and the leave cooldown in backrooms-server.toml.
- Players can use
/backrooms leave; ops have/backrooms pull, keeper, quietandloudand more (Commands). - Copying a door's room or generating a new column of The Remembering is the heavy part. The Remembering's Nether and End floors are copied from the real Nether and End, so those chunks generate too.
Updating from 2.0.0#
The old dimension (The Complex) is replaced. Its folder is moved to dimensions/backrooms/the_complex_2.0_backup, nothing is deleted. Players saved inside it are brought back to the overworld with a message. Overworld, items and Memarium carry over. Old iron-frame portals no longer open.
